Excessive Sweating (Hyperhidrosis)

Botox® for Axillary Hyperhidrosis

What is Hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) is a very common condition, which has two main types. Focal hyperhidrosis is the more common type and involves excessive sweating on the feet, hands, armpits and occasionally, the face. Generalised hyperhidrosis is less common.

Excessive sweating affects about 4% of the western population; it often interferes with the individual's life by causing physiological problems, such as cold and clammy hands, dehydration, and skin infections secondary to maceration of the skin, as well as emotional consequences due to embarassment, limiting daily activities, interfering with interpersonal relationship, necessitating frequent changes of clothes, etc.

Botox® (Botulinum Toxin) injections for Hyperhidrosis

Treatment for hyperhidrosis by Botulinum toxin injections can offer a life-changing solution for patients. By injectiong low doses of Botox® into the underarm, for example, it can reduce the transition of impulses and thus sweating activity by temporarily blocking the nerves that stimulate sweating for six to eight months.

Botox® injections offer a safe, approved and non-surgical solution to the treatment of hyperhidrosis. Botox® is a temporary solution and its effects are fully reversible.

After a consultation, numbing cream is applied to the area to be treated; a series of injection about one centimetre apart are injected into the area, followed by anti-bruising cream.

It is common to have small raised bumps of skin at the injection site; these may be slightly red and will go down about 20 minutes after treatment.

Complications are unlikely. However, sometimes there may be patchy results and in extremely rare cases, there has beeen a migration of the product into surrounding muscles with resulting arm weakness.

For the next four to six hours, do not rub or massage the area, avoid strenous exercise, avoid hot baths, showers or saunas, do not lie flat and avoid alcohol.
